Tokyo Trip - 28 December 2009

It's time to go to the market. Tsukiji fish market. Images of oiishi sushi came floating...

It's pretty easy, just head towards the Tsukijishijo Station.

As usual, I'll snap pics of nearby buildings.

as seen from Tsukijishijo station.. don't you just love the blue blue sky?

There's a distinctive fishy smell in the air. And you'll see people carrying bags of fresh fish, groceries etc. So, definitely this is the right place.

There're vehicles moving about in the fish market, so pedestrians need to watch out.

..

Other than that, there were long queues at the food shops.

queue everywhere! Then again, most shops seating capacity is quite limited

We weren't hungry yet, so we went about scouting the other shops in the vicinity.

They have shops selling tshirts, japanese style slippers, knives, nori, tea leaves, paper, crockery.. things that are associated with sushi shops, can be found here. Also interesting to note was that they had lots of shops selling the sweet tamago squares.

I was quite interested to buy tea leaves, so stopped at this shop.

maryuyama nori shop, with free green tea and nori tasting

They had mostly loose tea leaves, and just 2 types of tea that's in teabags. So I bought those. The assorted flavors one costs 800 yen (for 16 teabags), while the mecha tea pack was 300 yen. Tried the sencha and hojicha. Very nice smell and flavor, I like!

queue everywhere!

Also tried using keywords when communicating with the shopkeepers. Asked for pricing and size of tshirts and the japanese style slippers. Haha, not too bad. At least the other party know what I'm saying.

can buy wasabi from most vege shops

But what's a visit to Tsukiji if we don't eat the sashimi or sushi? So, we also went to queue at one shop that appeared to have lesser number of people waiting.

We were about 8 bodies away in the queue, but I think we also waited for more than half hour.

took this picture while idling.. was trying to capture seagulls but either too slow or they flew too high

Finally, we went in!

we ate here

but don't know which sauce is for which.. coz it tasted similar

ohtoro!

ordered this, costs 850 yen... the dark red colored topped sushi I cannot identify, but it tasted good! Think its some part of the fish.. kinda fishy, but fresh and salty!

i liked it that the fish is bigger than the rice.. but its not as tasty as i imagined it to be

After lunch, we went back to the Subway to take train to Ginza.

Before that, here are some interesting signs near the Tsukijishijo station:
